Author Spotlight: Salisbury poet Marie Davis reflects on life, resilience in latest book

Salisbury author and poet Marie Davis, writing is more than a creative outlet. It is an opportunity to reflect on life's experiences, share personal lessons and remind others that even through difficult circumstances, there is always a reason to keep moving forward.
Davis recently published her second book, “Unforgettable Memories: A Journey Through Life,” a collection that brings together poetry and nonfiction to explore themes of survival, self-esteem, strength, determination and faith.
Although her journey toward becoming a published author began more recently, Davis said her interest in poetry dates back to her school years.
"I have always been interested in poetry," Davis said. "I started in intermediate school. It stopped, but picked it back up in retirement."
After retiring, Davis decided it was time to pursue some of the interests and goals she had set aside earlier in life. Writing became one of those pursuits, giving her an opportunity to explore her creativity and turn years of thoughts and experiences into something she could share with others.
Her journey as a published author began in October 2025. Rather than rushing the process, Davis approached her writing one step at a time, gradually collecting her work until she had enough material to bring together in a poetry book. That patience has become an important part of her writing philosophy.
Davis primarily writes free verse and rhyming poetry, with a particular interest in nonfiction and poetry that draws from real-life experiences. She said her daughters and friends have been among her greatest inspirations, encouraging her to continue writing and developing her craft. She also draws inspiration from influential literary voices, including Maya Angelou, James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni.
Entering her poems into writing contests has provided another source of encouragement, motivating her to continue pursuing poetry and sharing her work with a wider audience.
For Davis, the writing process often begins early in the morning. She enjoys spending time outdoors, listening to nature, observing birds and butterflies and taking in the peacefulness of her surroundings. Those quiet moments provide the clarity and inspiration she needs to put her thoughts on paper. However, writing does not always come easily.
Davis said writer's block is something she has experienced throughout her journey. When the words are not coming together, she sometimes steps away from her work and returns to it later in the day or the following morning.
"You have to be patient with it," she said.
That patience also reflects the larger message behind her latest book. Drawing from the ups and downs of life, Davis hopes her poetry reminds readers that difficult experiences do not have to define their futures.
Through the poems in “Unforgettable Memories: A Journey Through Life,” Davis explores the challenges people encounter from youth through adulthood. The collection focuses on the strength it takes to endure hardships, maintain self-esteem and continue believing in yourself even when circumstances become difficult. Her hope is that readers recognize they are not alone in their struggles.
"Regardless of what they are experiencing, they can still survive, endure and make it through life," Davis said.
She also wants readers to understand that success and personal growth do not always happen immediately. Sometimes, moving forward requires time, patience, belief and faith.
Since beginning her writing journey, Davis has experienced the excitement of seeing her work gain recognition in newspapers, magazines and articles. Her books have also become available through major retailers and online platforms, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart and ThriftBooks. Seeing her book on a shelf for the first time was an especially memorable experience.
"It was wonderful. It was like, wow, amazing, unbelievable," Davis said, reflecting on the experience of seeing her work published and distributed. "For this to be the second book, it was wonderful."
Outside of writing, Davis describes herself as a quiet and introverted person who enjoys a variety of creative hobbies. She spends her time crocheting, creating macrame projects, gardening and making different products and crafts. Although she is proud of her work in poetry, Davis is already looking toward her next creative endeavor.
She hopes to begin working on another book within the next one to three years, with plans to explore a different genre. One project she is particularly interested in pursuing is a children's book, allowing her to step outside of poetry and try something new. For now, Davis continues to embrace the opportunities that have come with rediscovering her passion for writing later in life.
Her journey serves as a reminder that creative ambitions do not have an expiration date and that it is never too late to pursue something meaningful.
Through “Unforgettable Memories: A Journey Through Life,” Davis hopes to offer readers more than a collection of poems. She wants to give them encouragement, reassurance and a reminder that even through life's most difficult chapters, strength and hope remain possible.
