Back to school season is approaching for students as the summer comes to an end. School supplies lists are starting to come out, new back to school clothes are being purchased and teachers across the county are in their first steps of prepping their classrooms. However, back to school can be a financial struggle for students in Statesville this upcoming academic year.
According to the National Retail Federation, one-third of shoppers have begun browsing and buying for back to school season this year. In 2025, families and students spent a total of $39.4 billion on school supplies across the United States for K-12 students. The average person spent a total of $143.77 just on school supplies alone, not including the cost of clothes, electronics and shoes. These costs can add up, especially for families with more than one child going back to school.
Taking a deeper dive into the cost of an average 6th grader back to school list in Statesville comes to the total of $35.32 (including tax) after shopping at Walmart with back to school deals. This is just the school supplies requested from the school—not including a backpack, lunchbox, clothing and shoes, electronics, teacher school supplies requests list and other fees.
The City of Statesville and Statesville YMCA is holding a back to school drive to give back to the local community for students in need this academic year. Statesville YMCA is looking for new shoes through their Shoe Donation Tree along with a school supplies donation drive. Statesville YMCA is accepting donations between July 1-17th.
The City of Statesville is looking to hand out 1,500 free backpacks to the local community that are packed with school supplies for local students. They are looking for school supplies donations to be dropped off at specific locations in Statesville by July 22nd. Some of the items that are being requested are washable markers, No. 2 pencils, pens, crayons, erasers, pocket folders, notebooks, 3-ring binders and more. The full donation list can be found here. The backpacks will be distributed on Saturday, August 1st from 11:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m. at the Statesville Event Center (300 S. Center Street).
