July is National Ice Cream Month: Support your local ice cream shops

July is national ice cream month meaning it is time to indulge in delicious frozen treats on hot summer days. The origin of ice cream is known to reach back as far as second century B.C., although there is no specific date nor inventory of the frozen, creamy sweetness. For over a thousand years, ice cream would pop up throughout history from Alexander the Great, King Solomon, Marco Polo and King Charles I. It was not until an advertisement in the New York Gazette on May 12, 1777 that ice cream became “widely available” here in North America. 

Until 1800, ice cream remained a rare and exotic dessert enjoyed mostly by the elite. In the 1850’s insulated ice houses started to become popular along with other technological advances. Today, the United States produces more than 6.4 billion pounds of dairy. Ice cream is widely consumed across the country, especially during the hot seasons. In 2025, around $92 billion USD in global ice cream sales.
