Public Hearing: Stamey Farm Road Data Center/Compass Data Center Individual Water Quality Certification
The Department of Environmental Quality of North Carolina (NCDEQ), Division of Water Resources announced on Monday will be holding a public hearing on Sept. 28, 2026. This hearing will allow for public comments on the Clean Water Act 401 Water Quality Certification Application for Stamey Farm Road Data Center/Compass Data Center in Iredell County.
The purpose of the public hearing is to allow interested individuals to submit verbal and/or written comments regarding the 401 Water Quality Certification application. This public hearing will take place at Mitchell Community College Continuing Education Campus, Joe Troutman Auditorium, 701 West Front Street, Statesville on Monday, Sept. 28 at 6:00 p.m.

The current proposed data center includes approximately five single-story data center buildings of 270,000 square feet each and one on-site substation in the Statesville area. Compass Data Centers in a Dallas, Texas based company working to complete their project on Stamey Farm Road.
According to a proposal in March 2026, “The construction of these facilities, which house servers which store and process data, is citadel to the U.S. economy and tech industry supplying high end processing capability to help alleviate historic demand and facilitate innovation. The project will also contribute to the development of the local economy of Statesville and the enhancement of local utilities and infrastructure.”
Implementation of this project would permanently impact 0.13 acre of wetland, 438 linear feet of stream channel and 7.36 acres of open water, according to an email from Krystynka Stygar in July 2026. The nearest waterway where the data center would be located is Back Creek and the nearest River Basin is South Yadkin River.
