Sharing their love and passion for baking and giving back to the community, Alex Greer and Blake Coffer started Crumb & Culture up with baking sourdough breads and baked goods. Starting in 2024, the two have crafted their own baked goods and community through their bread.
Greer, baker and mastermind behind the craft of sourdough, shares that he started selling his bread in December 2024 at a local farmers market. “After doing the farmers market, it died. In March, we started back up again,” said Greer. “Crazy Cool Collectables held a free market where small businesses could be set up. We saw it. I didn’t have the day off but we wanted to make it.”
Brad, owner of Crazy Cool Collectables, encouraged Greer to keep his baking business alive. “That led us to opening up pre-orders every week. Brad gave us the stepping stones,” said Greer.
Coffer shared that Greer and he moved to Kannapolis for a year and later relocated to Mooresville. “We didn’t know anyone here,” said Coffer. “Brad opening his doors to us led us to so many opportunities and partnerships.”
Coffer and Greer both work full-time jobs on top of managing and baking for Crumb & Culture. The bakery recently partnered with Controlled Chaos, a mobile coffee stand, to sell their baked goods to the community. “The partnership went off well,” said Coffer. “I was working full-time at Coddle Creek and she was set up there in the parking lot. I remember telling Alex that it would be cool for her to have our stuff on her truck.”
Crumb & Culture started out with a love and passion for cooking and baking, explained Greer. “Cooking and food has always been a big part of my family,” he said. He shared how working at Chipotle and now managing the Deli at Publix, he appreciates the skill of culinary arts. “After learning about sourdough, I liked it. I picked it up after Covid and became interested in it.”
After Coffer and Greer researched how to start up their own baking business, they both wanted to stand out compared to other bakeries in the community. “We wanted something to divide us from other small businesses,” said Coffer. “We want to give back every month to the community. It always felt like it was good to give back.”
Crumb & Culture has taken part in multiple community fundraisers including donating a raffle basket to Children’s Miracle Network with Costco raising $500, working with Hope House in Mooresville and holding a back to school drive for local schools. Crumb & Culture is brainstorming new ways to give back to their local community in the future, along with fun new recipes. “We are hoping to get a pop up camper, gut it out, and have a full bakery case so we can travel with it,” said Coffer.
Crumb & Culture takes online orders every week with their pick-up taking place on Sunday. For more information about their baked goods and to place an order with Crumb & Culture, visit their website.
