Wandering Crow Bookshop turns One this August

Wandering Crow Bookshop is celebrating their one year anniversary this August after opening their doors to local book lovers. Sam La Flamme and her husband, Austin, opened Wandering Crow Bookshop located on 108 W Broad St. in downtown Statesville.
Sam La Flamme, owner of Wandering Crow Bookshop, shares her love for reading and community through her businesses. “We wanted to offer a community hub for people,” stated La Flamme.
La Flamme spent a lot of her time here in Statesville, explaining how the town reminds her of a Hallmark movie. “Last year at the beginning of the year, I was visiting a book store in Salisbury and I got hit with a moment of, ‘Why doesn’t Statesville have this?’” That led her to researching and finding a new route to establish a bookstore here in Statesville.
“Bookstores are more than just literature, it is also a third space,” said La Flamme. “I wanted Statesville to have this bookstore feel and that was the inspiration behind opening. When we opened the place, we wanted to have book clubs and a fun space. Sharing a wall with a coffee shop, it couldn’t be more perfect.”
On the grand opening day of Wandering Crow bookshop, more than 100 customers shuffled through the doors of Wandering Crow and expressed their joy with the new shop. La Flamme shared how the name of the bookstore was to be whimsical but give a sense that customers can wander into the shop and search for their next read. Now, one year later, the bookstore is home to multiple book clubs and a new third-space in Statesville.
“One of the first book clubs here had at least 30 people show up. No one knew one another. Within the following month, I saw little groups of people grabbing coffee, making friends and building connections,” shared La Flamme. “That was our goal from the start, is for people to make friends.”
Wandering Crow offers a variety of books from banned books, fantasy, young adult and children's books. In addition, La Flamme shares how she shelves local and indie authors in her store as well. “We have done a lot of stocking local authors, a few events and a counter space for local authors as well,” shared La Flamme. “We also have a link on our website where local authors can submit their work.”
With the one year anniversary of the bookshop approaching, La Flamme reflects on the past year. “We have encompassed so much of what I wanted to achieve,” beamed La Flamme. “I want to keep the community.” She shares the impacts that the store has on local youth to older adults in Statesville, leading to more reading and building a stronger community.
Wandering Crow is celebrating their first year anniversary with two special events lined up in the month of August. Friday, Aug. 14th is the Crow Party (18+) and Sunday, Aug. 16 featuring NYT & USA Today bestselling author Ellery Adams.
